Tim Horton What does the USA need to do to beat Brazil in the confederations cup final on Sunday?

I think that the US must come out confident that they can compete againt Brazil and not be intimidated. They must give Brazil no time on the ball, they must leave everthing on the field, stay compact and counter attack with speed. Brazil's game against South Africa was not a convincing win but does show how important free kicks are in competitions like this. So the US defense cannot give anyway any silly fouls around the 18 because Brazil will punish them. Here is the projected USA lineup and i… Continue

Tim Horton USA USA USA - The US Men's National Team earned their 2-0 win of Spain, Worlds #1 ranked team

I can tell you I was jumping up and down and yelling at my TV when Jozy Altidore scored and then Clint Dempsey to beat Spain, the Worlds #1 ranked team to earn a sport in the Confederations Cup final against either Brazil or South Africa on Sunday. Everything myself and all the other fans and pundits were complaining about from the first two games against Italy and Brazil such as lack of heart, poor tactical decisions, questionable coaching, were all erased, first starting with the Egypt win an… Continue

Apostoli BARCALONAS APPROAC TO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

By Mike Woitalla Two years ago, while visiting Spain, I looked into to its approach to youth development. Since then, Spain has won the 2008 European Championship and Barcelona won the 2009 UEFA Champions League. Both teams won their titles playing attractive, attack-minded soccer in an era dominated by cautious, defensive play. As coaches have become ever more obsessed with strength and size, Barcelona and Spain's star players are notable for their skill and small stature. Among those I… Continue

Apostoli REVAMP YOUTH SOCCER ARTICLE

Editor's note: This is Part 5 of a five-part series examining the structure and organization of the U.S. Soccer Federation and its youth programs. Of all the words that can be used to describe John Hackworth, "revolutionary" isn't one that immediately comes to mind. The current U.S. national team assistant is as easygoing as they come. Bring up the state of youth soccer in the United States, however, and it doesn't take long for Hackworth to go all Patrick Henry on you, although in his case, he… Continue

Apostoli TRAINING TO GAMES

BELOW S ONE OF MY SOCCER PARENTS AND FELLOW COACH. HIS NAME IS JOE HAMM. HE PLAYED ON THE 1972 OLYMPIC TEAM. I ALWAYS ENJOY HIS INSIGHTS. Scott, i agree with the guy, when i was in St.Philip Neri grade school, we played 10-12 league games, and maybe 4 or 5 playoff games tops. our school yard soccer hours to CYC game hours ratio was probably 20-1. only 2 or 3 parents showed up. Mr. Flynn, father of US soccer president Dan Flynn, coached us in 5th and 6th grade. then in high school CYC select, w… Continue

Mark Prizant "The 1v1 Artist"- An examination in the devlopment of creative players

As we embark on another round of trials at various levels throughout the country (club, state ODP, regional ODP, Youth National Teams, ect...) I am reminded of where our players fall behind....TECHNIQUE!! Part of the issue is that we the coaches kill off these creative players at a young age, and do not encourage a love affair with the ball. For those of you which have taken the National Youth License they refer to the ball as "the toy"; a more appropriate description I can't fathom. Attached is… Continue

Kempton Mood Did I let them down

I just finished my first season coaching a U10 girls team and it did not go well. We ended the season with two wins both over our sisster U10 team. IT is not that we lost it was how we lost 9-0, 6-0 and so on. This past weakend we played in our league touroment we had five games zero wins and only two of the games were close. As individual players I felt each of the girls had improved but as a team not so much. Normally this would not bother me but walking off the pitch yesterday I saw some of m… Continue

Amanda Vandervort In honor of Charlotte Moran

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I share the passing of our friend and women's soccer champion, Charlotte Moran. Charlotte passed away peacefully early this morning at her home after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Apostoli COACHING NINJAS-BEWARE!

Please do not become COACHING NINJAS. Coaching ninjas are the coaches that whip coaching terms and words around like a ninja throwing those bloody steel stars. One after another, not even aiming sometimes. Remember, coaching is not about letting everyone in the world hear how many coaching terms you can remember, it is about how well your players can learn the game from you. I like the KISS principle, Keep It Simple Stupid! Always remind yourself coaching is about developing young minds andContinue

Apostoli SHOOTING WITH INSTEP FOR STRIAGHT OR BENDING BALLS

It is important to remember the physics of the driven instep shot. We spend enless hours teaching this skill to our players at training and camp. 1. Strike the ball with the top lower few inside laces. This is a very boney part of the foot and provides the most force. 2. Strike through the center of the ball for the straight driven shot that dips at the end 2b. Strike through the inner half of the center of the ball for the bending or banana shot. 3. Support leg is even with ball but a littl… Continue

Apostoli GOALKEEPER SCRAMBLE SAVE FROM WCC.

As an example yellow 1 has the ball AT THE NEAR POST AROUND THE 9YD LINE and the keeper is having to prepare for the shot. If yellow 1 passes across the goal mouth to yellow 2, it puts the keeper in a very bad situation While the keeper would love to have the opportunity to get across the goal mouth, get set and then cut off the angle, the reality is yellow 2 is most likely going to shoot first time. This means the keeper will most likely take a step or two and dive across the goal, hoping to p… Continue

Apostoli SUBSTITUTIONS

Substitutions happen all the time. This is the problem in the USA. It is common practice for a coach to sub a group of players 7-10 minutes after the game has started. Players want to play. I do not even consider a sub for my teams playing 30 minute, or longer, halves until 15-20 minutes into the game. This allows the players on the pitch to learn how to play extended periods of time and the players must figure out how to solve problems on the field. The players on the bench are relaxed because… Continue
