I was able to DVR all three games today broadcast around these parts: Burnley-Liverpool; Chelsea-Stoke; Tottenham-Man U. I haven't watched the Man U/Spurs game yet and I have avoided finding out the score.
A day for rooting for the underdogs. Burnley is appealing and it's been fun watching Blake play this year. However, where's he been? In the last few games he's become less of a presence, and there's a lot of talk about Elliott at midfield. Burnley repeatedly attacked down the right to little effect. Not sure about Patterson. Fletcher was ineffective with combination play on the right. Every time Blake gets the ball he tries to do something creative. I love old guys!
Elliott: he dogged it getting back, which directly led to Liverpool's second goal.
Bring Blake back to the fore!
What a game at The Britt! Chelsea's 2nd goal at the whistle was crushing: Stoke played the hell out of defense, with the exception of Faye's crazy dribbling in the back. He was of course also phenomenal and strong.
What a difference in defenses: Burnley was wide open in the middle today. Where was the center midfield defense?!Why was their back line giving so much space and time right at their 18 to Liverpool? Stoke, on the other hand, presented a phenomenally committed back 3 (or 4). Both defenses invited the favorites to dribble the middle and attack the back line with combination play--one for the right reason: tight organization, and one for the wrong reason: wide open middle. Chelsea almost couldn't break it down despite excellent possession play. The slotted pass from Lampard to Drogba showed how it could be done and was truly world class. Burnley? Once Gerard was brought forward, among others, it became a wonder that Liverpool didn't have more...
Now for the DVR: go Spurs!
